Colonial Williamsburg

More than 500 buildings, many of them dating from the 1700s, comprise the downtown Historic Area. Highlights include the 1770 Courthouse, the Capitol Building with its rare portraits of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery, Bassett Hall, and the Governor's Palace, which was completed in 1722 and faces the Palace Green.

Jamestown Settlement and Jamestown, the Original Site The epic of America's first permanent English colony is retold through a short film, gallery exhibits, and dramatic reenactments at the Jamestown Settlement which also features a colonial fort, Indian village, and a full-sized replica of an English sailing vessel. The National Park Service maintains a visitors' center and conducts tours of the original landing site on Jamestown Island. Talk with archaeologists who continue to unearth the remains of the original fort.

James River Plantations

Set along the scenic banks of the James River, some of Virginia's oldest and most stately plantations offer a romantic glimpse into America's history with manicured grounds, restored buildings, guided tours, and costumed interpreters. The more noteworthy plantations include historic Berkeley Plantation, Evelynton Plantation, and Sherwood Forest Plantation, which was the home of our 10th president, John Tyler.

Yorktown Battlefield and Yorktown Victory Center Begin your tour of the Yorktown Battlefield at the visitor center by watching a short film then check out the museum and rooftop overlook. Innovative galleries and costumed interpreters evoke the spirit of America's struggle for independence at the nearby Yorktown Victory Center where you join a Continental Army canon crew or lend a hand in the garden or kitchen of a Colonial farm.

Williamsburg Winery
