


Located about 150 miles south of Washington DC, midway between Richmond and Virginia Beach, Williamsburg rests on a peninsula between the James and York rivers. Situated in a fertile region known as the Virginia Tidewater, Williamsburg was originally settled as a plantation in 1632 but, because of its strategic location, it quickly grew into an important outpost for the colony.
Williamsburg's climate is typical of the mid-Atlantic coastal region. Summers tend to be hot and humid while winters are generally mild. The ocean moderates temperatures when compared to inland Virginia. Rainfall averages 45 inches annually with seven inches of snowfall.
