Because so much of the activity in Washington includes sightseeing and casual strolling, comfortable and casual clothing is something of a "law of the land" in the nation's capital. Obvious exceptions include upscale restaurants, clubs, and theatres, many of which require a jacket and tie. In summer, you'll want loose-fitting, natural fibers, a heavy coat for winter months, and good walking shoes throughout the year.
