Capitol Hill

As the seat of the legislative branch of the US government, the domed Capitol building is fittingly never far from sight, residing within a park-like setting that stretches over an area of nearly 60 acres. The grounds are as striking as the Capitol itself. The formal architecture and straight lines of the governmental buildings are juxtaposed with curved walkways and over 100 varieties of trees, bushes, and flowers. Benches along the walkways allow for great vantage points from which to take in the great view, which includes the Mall to the west.

The White House

For 200 years, the White House has stood as a symbol of the Presidency, the United States government, and the American people. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the White House is the seat of the executive branch of the government, and a place where foreign dignitaries and notable citizens are often entertained by the President. But this is also the President's private home, and yet it is open to the public, free of charge. President Jefferson first opened the house for public tours back in 1805, and it has remained open, except during wartime, ever since.

Georgetown

One of the city's loveliest and most historic neighborhoods, visitors often compare this district to New York City's Greenwich Village. The place is always a party, day or night, and is alive with a cornucopia of culture, shopping, and entertainment. It has an ambiance of laid-back importance, with distinctive architecture and a rich history.

Arlington National Cemetery

Established as the nation's cemetery in 1864, Arlington is the final resting place for more than 250,000 men and women of America's armed forces. In addition to the nation's war dead, many notable Americans are interred here, as well, including Presidents William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy.

The Mall

Bound on the north and south by Constitution and Independence avenues and on the east and west by 3rd and 14th streets, this expanse of green is the capital's great park, and the heart of almost every visitor's trip to Washington. The Mall is surrounded by nearly a dozen museums and is directly adjacent to the striking Washington Monument, from where a long reflecting pool stretches out to the Lincoln Memorial. But the Mall is more than just the front yard for the nation's museums and monuments. As America's town green, this national landmark is also a favorite picnic spot, an outdoor concert stage, festival ground, and a gathering spot for marches, parades, and even the occasional protest.
