Virgin Gorda, BVI

Virgin Gorda, BVI's Topography

The island of Virgin Gorda is inhabited by a modest 1,500 residents and is ten miles long by two miles wide. The northern half of the island is covered with mountains, the highest peak reaching 1,370 feet. Just off the northern coast, two small pieces of land called Mosquito and Prickly Pear Islands, form the North Sound and provide calm surf beaches. The southern part of the island is home to the most popular beaches and is relatively flat.

Virgin Gorda, BVI's weather year around

Mostly, you should expect sunny, warm weather all year. It often rains in short spurts about 10 days of each month, but the showers are usually nothing more than a refreshing break from the warm sun and a way to cool down a bit. Lows average about 77° and highs average 85°. The heart of hurricane season lasts from late August to early November, though strikes are rare and there is plenty of advance notice to prepare. When threatened by a hurricane strike, one should expect a 2-day displacement from evacuation to safe return.

Spring 76°-84°.

Summer 80°-88°.

Fall 79°-86°.

Winter 75°-83°.

Since the weather varies little, any time is the best time to come to Virgin Gorda. Yet, since most people want to escape the winter blues, the island tends to be more crowded during the high season winter months. Spring, summer and fall provide weather very similar to winter, so if you want seclusion and minimal activity, it is best to visit during the low season.
