The largest of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola's landscape ranges from the mountains and hills covered with cactus, wild tamarind, frangipani, and sage that characterize the southern coast, to the beautiful white sandy beaches, groves of bananas and mangoes, and clusters of palm trees of the north.
The average year-round temperature is 78°-85°. In the winter, the high elevations can be cooler and very windy, especially with the winds of November through January. The heart of hurricane season lasts from late August to early November, though strikes are rare and there is plenty of advance notice to prepare. When threatened by a hurricane strike, one should expect a 2-day displacement from evacuation to safe return.
