Christiansted

The architectural quality and historic interest of this one-time capital of the Danish West Indies, founded in 1734, has made it a National Historic Site. Standing sentry over Christiansted Harbor and the Caribbean Sea is Fort Christiansvaern, an imposing, yellow-brick marvel built by the Danes to ward off and imprison pirates. Nearby, Christiansted's Steeple Building - the first church built by the Danes - is now a museum of Carib and Arawak Indian culture, and sugar plantation relics. Another church of historic note on St Croix is Friedensthal Moravian Church, the oldest of its kind under the American flag. Christiansted has been called the picture-book harbor of the Caribbean, and is graced by a natural reef. Designed by the Dutch West Indies Company, this city offers more than historic buildings. It has modern shopping, excellent dining and nightlife, and numerous outstanding resort hotels.

Frederiksted

This quiet community on the west shore is home to Frederiksted Pier, one of the Caribbean's premier dives with a huge variety of marine life. On the western end of the island, Fort Frederik was constructed centuries ago to protect the town from buccaneers. The fort stands over beautiful Victorian homes and 19th-century churches nestled throughout the town's shady streets. St Croix's only lighthouse overlooks several beautiful islands in the Caribbean. Built in the late 1800s on Hams Bluff cliff, the lighthouse remains the island's sole beacon of light over the sea.

Buck Island

This is a nature lover's dream in a perfectly preserved underwater US National Park that covers over 850 acres, with a sandy beach, picnic tables, and barbecue pits. Renowned for its excellent snorkeling and diving, the reef has two major underwater trails, and there are also land trails into the uninhabited interior. Numerous boats in Christiansted will whisk you over to this coral garden wonder.
