Sarasota is a sub-tropical coastal town on the west coast of Florida sheltered by barrier islands. These long and thin islands supply many miles of beaches and calm waters off the Gulf of Mexico. The city itself is flat and is lush with palm trees and other semi-tropical plants.
Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine! Even in the wet summer season, storms are immediately followed by strong sunshine so it is very rare to go a day without several hours perfect for lying on the shore. It's a sub-tropical climate all year, but winters are a bit cooler and less humid than summer, making it the best time of year to visit. The heart of hurricane season lasts from late August to early November, though strikes are rare and there is plenty of advance notice to prepare. When threatened by a hurricane strike, one should expect a 2-day displacement from evacuation to safe return.
