Santa Fe, NM

What to wear in Santa Fe, NM

Santa Fe summers are hot and winters are cold and snowy, so pack light natural fibers for summer with a light jacket for cool evenings, and warm layers for winter. Make sure to take sunglasses, sunblock, and a wide-brimmed hat. Good walking shoes are necessary, because this town was made for walking! Santa Feans dress casually but smartly, and western wear nearly always works. Elegant evening dress is best for the performing arts.

Advising for Santa Fe, NM visitors

We strongly advise that you confirm the following information and regard this only as a basic guide.

Visiting Pueblos

While the Pueblo people are traditionally generous and welcoming, there are modes of conduct that should be followed to avoid problems. Obey all rules and regulations of the individual Pueblos and see that children are controlled and respectful. These are not theme parks, they are real villages and homes are private, so do not enter them! Do not climb walls or other structures as they may be ancient and easily damaged, nor should you pick up or remove any objects such as pieces of broken pottery. Kivas and graveyards must not be entered by non-Pueblo people.

Pueblo Ceremonies

There are rules for courteous behavior when it comes to ritual dances, which are religious in nature and not staged performances. They should be observed with respect and quiet attention. Talking or asking questions of dancers or non-dance participants should be avoided, and applause after dances is not appropriate. On feast days, when many families open their homes, it is courteous to accept an invitation to eat but don't linger or offer more than gracious thanks.

Pueblo Photography

Photography is another area where knowing the rules will make for a better visit. Each Pueblo has its own permits and restrictions, so check into these before taking pictures. Rules that apply to all the Pueblos include asking permission before taking an individual's picture, not interrupting or interfering with dances, and using pictures for private use only, as they may not be reproduced or sold without written permission.
