The city lies 60 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, on a strip of land between the Delaware and Schuykill Rivers. Philadelphia was originally built just north of the marshlands created by the confluence of the rivers. Much of the marshy areas have been drained and developed. The city has also expanded to include the tree-covered hills surrounding the urban center.
Much like New York City, Philadelphia can range from sweltering heat and humidity to biting winter cold. There are four distinct seasons in Philadelphia, with temperatures ranging from the 90°Fs down to the 20°Fs. The city averages less then ten days of precipitation per month, with the majority falling in the first half of the year.
