Greater Miami and the Beaches make up a sprawling metropolis that covers over 2,000 square miles at sea level on the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula. An intracoastal waterway separates the mainland from Miami Beach. The land is flat with porous limestone bedrock, bordered by long stretches of beach on Atlantic Ocean.
Semi-tropical weather prevails, with slightly cooler winter months. The average annual temperature is 80°F, but occasional winter cold spells can drop the temperatures to the high 50°Fs - low 60°Fs. June through September is the rainy season, mostly relatively short, afternoon thunderstorms followed by intense sunshine. The heart of hurricane season lasts from late August to early November, though strikes are rare and there is plenty of advance notice to prepare. When threatened by a hurricane strike, one should expect a 2-day displacement from evacuation to safe return.
