What to wear in Maui, HI

Very informal clothing - shorts, sneakers, and t-shirts - will suffice for most attractions and restaurants. Only a handful of resorts require dinner jackets for men (provided if you need one), and for the rest a polo shirt and khakis is more than good enough; aloha shirts are considered dressy! If you plan to climb Haleakala, you will definitely need several layers of cold weather clothing. Water shoes, comfortable walking/hiking shoes and cushioned socks are also essential.

Spoken language in Maui, HI

English and Hawaiian are the official languages. The Hawaiian language is a beautiful, flowing tongue that captures the natural beauty of the islands in its tone and phrases. After many years of suppression, the language has enjoyed a vital renewal in recent decades, with the number of fluent speakers rising dramatically. It was made an official language of the state in 1978.

Advising for Maui, HI visitors

We strongly advise that you confirm the following information and regard this only as a basic guide.

Sunburn and Heatstroke

Tropical sun can be very harsh, so be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and a hat. Also, drink lots of water to prevent dehydration. The top of Haleakala is very cold and because of the high altitude thin air, you will burn much more easily than at sea level.
