Maui, HI

Maui, HI's Topography

Maui was formed by the eruption of two volcanoes, Pu`u Kukui and Haleakala, which spewed enough lava to form the "Valley Isle" between them. This is the only place in the world where you can drive from sea level to 10,000 feet in just 37 miles, passing tropical beaches, sugar and pineapple plantations, and grassy hills along the way. The Hawaiian Islands are the tops of the largest volcanic mountain range on Earth, and Maui's volcano, Haleakala (the House of the Sun) is the largest dormant volcano on the planet. The West Maui Mountains are the 2nd wettest spot in the world, with over 350 inches of rain each year, yet it is also sunny every day. Maui is home to a lush coastline, the swampy bogs of the West Mountains, the bountiful breadbasket of the upcountry, the tropical rainforest of the Hana coast, countless waterfalls, and the arid desert of Kaupo.

Maui, HI's weather year around

Maui has fairly consistent weather throughout the year, moderated by the constant trade winds. The summer and winter seasons marked only by mild temperature changes and increased rainfall during the cooler winter months. The two volcanoes that formed and dominate Maui give it a remarkable range of climate zones, which are very localized. Because of this condition, the weather you experience is entirely dependent on your location. For example, a traveler driving from the central valley to the summit of the Haleakala volcano will pass through 11 different climate zones. This means, of course, that if the weather is less than ideal wherever you are, a short drive will usually take you to a warm sunny spot. Except for the late summer to autumn hurricane season, which brings heavier rain, most showers last only 10-15 minutes each day followed by immediate sunshine. Only two hurricanes have hit Hawaii in 75 years.

Summer average 70°F - 85°F.

Winter average 65°F - 80°F.
