North of the Santiago Peninsula lies a 15-mile stretch of beautiful beaches lined with upscale resorts. This region fulfills your every vacation need, from water sports such as scuba diving and snorkeling to beaches perfect for sunbathing and lounging. A perfect complement to the activities along the serene waters of the bay, the resorts also offer land activities such as golf and tennis.
The coastal highway (the Costera) that connects the 2 bays and reaches to the end of this peninsula is your gateway to many of the fine restaurants and nightly entertainment found in Manzanillo. You'll enjoy international cuisine ranging from French to Argentinean, and local specialties prepared in traditional Mexican restaurants. The nightlife is a bit on the calm side, but you will still find a variety of fun ways to spend the evening, like dancing to live mariachi music and sipping frozen cocktails while chatting up the locals at a beachfront bar.
The more southern of the 2 bays is also the more secluded. There are numerous beaches, less visited and just as pretty as those to the north. Although home to a few resorts, the area is blissfully quiet. If you want to escape the hoopla of the tourist trade and a get a more genuine taste of daily life in Manzanillo, this is the place for you.
The mile-long boardwalk downtown has terrific views of the harbor with both grand ships and dozens of the tiny panga boats used by local fishermen. The waterway is shaded by palm trees and accented with sculptures by local artists. The downtown center revolves around the Jardin, an elegantly landscaped garden that is lively in the evenings, and serves as an impromtu "stage" for local street performers. Just off the Jardin is Avenida Mexico, a street with several bargain eateries as well as shops selling tourist curios. The other interesting attraction here is the Museum of Archaeology and History, with displays that include pre-Hispanic artifacts from Colima State and a changing exhibits of important Mexican painters.
