Whoever said that people don't walk in LA has never visited bustling downtown. Stroll among the cafés and restaurants of Chinatown or take a walking tour of Bunker Hill before checking out the Museum of Contemporary Art. If you get tired, hop on the restored Angels Flight, the world's shortest incline railway, or ride the 25ó DASH shuttle around the city center. Look for City Hall, which played the Daily Planet building in the 1950s Superman TV show. Cheer a game at Dodger Stadium and pick up some souvenirs like the hand-made Mexican silver jewelry, Japanese garden tools, and Chinese jade carvings, or get in style with half-price designer clothes from the Fashion District. And if the Jewelry District beckons, perhaps you'll remember Downtown with a diamond that glitters like the LA skyline.
LA inevitably conjures up images of fame and fortune, and a tour of the Westside brings you to the heart of the glamour. Visit the hills of Bel Air, filled with lavish homes, or Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills - but beware! You could easily breeze through your life savings in a day! This is where the "beautiful people" live, shop, and party, at places like Dan Aykroyd's House of Blues on the famous Sunset Strip. You just might catch a glimpse of some of the Westside's star residents. The attraction of this neighborhood, however, isn't limited to show-biz. With over 300 museums, this is a great place for a crash-course in art history, and Museum Row on Wilshire's Miracle Mile is a prime place to start.
Sets of old movies from the Golden Age of the silver screen. A working movie set. The famed white letters that loom high on a hill in the background. Ease your way into Tinseltown by getting an attitude and "doing lunch" at Musso and Franks, still popular with old-time Hollywood power brokers, or get star-struck in a live audience at a TV taping. Even after your feet touch every star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and you've bought an autographed poster of your favorite actor, you're nowhere near through with Hollywood. On the more rustic side, there are over 53 miles of foot and horse trails in Griffith Park, if you fancy yourself young and hip you can shop for an ultra-trendy outfit on Melrose before going club-hopping, and families will get a kick out of Universal Studios Hollywood. If you're the romantic sort, nothing compares to a picnic at a symphony under the stars in the Hollywood Bowl.
