At once old and avant-garde, this is the capital and largest city, focusing on business yet also offering the best in Jamaica's culture, such as the Jamaica Philharmonic, the National Dance Theater, and the Hope Botanical Gardens. Residents in this dry, dusty region call it the reggae capital of the world. Nearby are Port Royal, once an infamous pirate lair destroyed by earthquake in 1692 and now restored, and Spanish Town, the capital from 1534-1872. It was the second city built here by the Spaniards after the now-abandoned Nueva Sevilla.
