Isla Mujeres is approximately five miles long and one-half mile wide and is located northeast of Cancun, where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea. The north and west sides emphasize the island's natural beauty with crystal-clear waters and white-sand beaches. The rocky eastern shore is mesmerizing (but too dangerous for swimming), while the southern end of the island features extraordinary reefs as well as cliffs with some of the highest elevation points in the Yucatan.
Like Cancun, Isla Mujeres is sunny most of the year, and its coastal location brings in trade winds that make summers cooler than mainland jungle areas. Winters are very pleasant, with warm and mild weather. Some nights, however, as well as the powerful air-conditioning, require a light sweater. The heart of hurricane season lasts from early September to late October, though strikes are rare and there is plenty of advance notice to prepare. When threatened by a hurricane strike, one should expect a 2-day displacement from evacuation to safe return. The average year-round temperature is 85°F during the day and 75°F at night.
