Hilton Head is a 42-square mile semi-tropical barrier island at the southern tip of South Carolina, with 12 miles of beautiful beaches occupied by individual resorts called "plantations." The only city on the island is Harbour Town. The island has broad beaches on its ocean side and sea marshes on its sound. The lush wooded areas in between are home to countless pine, bay, oak, and palmetto trees. Luckily, much of the natural beauty has been carefully protected from commercial development.
Hilton Head's idyllic conditions are a major part of what make it such a wonderful vacation spot. Most of the year is warm and comfortable, though the humidity levels increase in July and August. Spring and fall bring temperatures in the mid-60°Fs to low 70°Fs, and the summer months reach the high 70°Fs. Even in the winter, temperatures rarely fall below 50°F.
