Known as an arts and crafts center of significant renown, it offers one of the country's greatest shopping experiences. You'll find an appealing combination of an authentic Colonial setting with affordable, high-quality crafts and fine art. The district retains the atmosphere of a colonial village with pedestrian arcades, and grand mansions converted into galleries, shops and restaurants.
One of the oldest pueblos in Mexico, this small village is packed with workshops producing most of the pottery and ceramics sold in the area. It's a like a less flashy sister to Tlaquepaque, and very worthwhile for serious bargain-hunters. Centuries-old techniques are still used, and the pottery markets are a "must.".
The main attraction of this old native village is the Basílica de Zapopan, built in 1730 as the shrine for the statue of Nuestra Señora de Zapopan. During the year, the statue is carried to churches throughout Jalisco before it is returned to its home in October amid an elaborate procession.
