Started in the 1240s by the first king of the Nasrids, this fortress once held a complex of barracks, schools, houses, and baths contained by defense towers. Visitors can tour the Royal Palace, with its fortress, towers, courtyards, staterooms and harem. The terraces and promenades in the Generalife-the ancient summer palace of the kings-offer a majestic view of the city.
This ancient Moorish neighborhood, founded in 1228, is made up of private villages in lush gardens enclosed by high walls. Though the mosques have been converted into churches, part of the original city wall runs alongside the Cuesta de la Alhacaba. Visitors can stop into one of the charming teashops for a cup of mint tea.
