The sprawling capital of Venezuela covers the vast expanse of a long, narrow valley that runs East-West under the gaze of Mount Avila. On one side of the valley are the uninhabited, green slopes of Avila National Park, while on the southern side lay heavily settled suburban hills. Caracas is only 10 miles south of the coast (La Guaira Port), and 3,000 feet above sea level.
With such a high altitude and close proximity to the ocean, Caracas experiences a unique tropical climate, with mild temperatures year-round. The summer is generally warmer than the winter, but winter temperatures rarely fall below 50°F at night. From May to November the city is drenched in the rainy season, but December to April is the dry season.
